STATEMENT OF PROTEST AGAINST THE INVASION OF UKRAINE BY RUSSIAN ARMY

We, the Japanese Society for the Study of Slavic Languages and Literatures (JSSSLL), as a society of scholars who engage in studies of all Slavic cultures, including those of Russia and Ukraine, have been appalled and deeply saddened by the invasion of Ukraine by the armies of the Russian Federation. As we aim to deepen mutual understanding between people of different countries, nations and cultures, we strongly oppose war, which destroys people’s lives, property and culture. We are calling for an immediate ceasefire, and we support all of those caught up in the conflict.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) offers 200 places to accommodate and to provide for the refugees who are coming from Ukraine. The academic leadership of the University in cooperation with the Student Union prepares an aid package that helps the humanitarian activities near the border and the Ukranian students of the University.

Due to the current situation in Ukraine, Márton Áron Dormitory in Debrecen, that belongs to ELTE, has taken in the families of three dormitory students and it will keep helping in accommodating refugees until it reaches its capacity limit. Dr. Gyula Scheuer, the Chancellor of the University has offered 200 places to refugees and their families who are fleeing from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, amongst them are traditional dormitory places and newer, renovated family apartments as well.

Dr. László Borhy, the Rector of the University and the academic leadership in cooperation with the Student Government is working on an aid package that can directly help students of the University and the humanitarian aid processes at the borders, whether it is assistance in translation from the students and teachers of the Ukrainian language program at the University, psychological counselling, or collecting donations within the University for those in need.

Presently, there are 157 Ukrainian students studying at ELTE, amongst them 116 hold double citizenships, and there are 221 residents at the ELTE dormitories who have a registered address in Ukraine. The University provides adequate information to all of its students and if needed a psychological counsel as well.

Statement

of the Czech Rectors Conference on the War in Ukraine

Rectors of Czech Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), members of the Czech Rectors Conference (CRC), are shocked by the further development of the situation in Ukraine, where Russia has committed and is committing purposeful and well-thought-out military aggression against another independent state.

CRC strongly condemns Russia’s actions and its violent and conquest policies. Every independent state has the right to make democratic decisions about its future and its direction. What Russia is doing is trampling not only on international law, but also on all the ideals of European civilization and peaceful coexistence between European nations. With its latest steps, the Russian leadership is removing Russia from the community of civilized European states of the 21st century.

We in the Czech Republic – with our historical experience of 1938 and 1968 – must be particularly vigilant and should be very acute about the seriousness of the current situation and warn against it. It is amazing how much the current rhetoric of the Russian leadership is reminiscent of the Nazi rhetoric and the aggressive and conquering policies they pursued towards Czechoslovakia in 1938. The current Russian leadership uses the same vocabulary behind a similar way of thinking.

In the current situation, CRC appeals to the Czech political representation – in cooperation with our European partners and allies – to take a very active and proactive role in a rapid and decisive
pan-European response to Russia’s aggressive actions. Europe must be united.

HEIs of the Czech Republic, whose rectors are members of the CRC, are ready to provide assistance to Ukrainian citizens in difficult life situations, especially students and academics, and to actively participate in humanitarian and other necessary assistance.

CRC is taking and will continue to take steps to provide effective assistance to the citizens of a country that has now been the target of open Russian aggression.

Prohlášení Ostravské univerzity k ukrajinským univerzitám

The University of Ostrava has already condemned Russia’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, expressed its solidarity with Ukraine and its people, and joined the statement of the Czech Rectors’ Conference on the war in Ukraine.

However, the war in Ukraine has also directly affected the University of Ostrava itself. The University of Ostrava has a number of partner institutions in Ukraine and there are many Ukrainian students studying in Ostrava, both full-time students and students on exchange programmes. Russian missiles have hit the city of Lviv, where our partner Lviv Polytechnic National University is located, and fierce battles are being fought over the city of Kharkiv, the seat of our partner V. N. Karazin National University. We are therefore concerned for the lives and safety of many academics with whom we work and who are our friends. We are also concerned for the lives and safety of students, administrative and technical staff and their loved ones. When the Russian aggression began, several Ukrainian students were on their way to Ostrava as part of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programme. We do not know where they are at the moment, whether they have managed to leave the territory of Ukraine or whether they have decided to stay with their families. We just hope that they are safe.

We would like to express our deepest solidarity to all our partner universities in Ukraine and to all the Ukrainian people.

Prohlášení Ostravské univerzity k ruským univerzitám

prof. MUDr.

V duchu jsme s našimi přáteli a kolegy akademiky, studenty i všemi obyvateli Ukrajiny. A jsme připraveni v rámci svých maximálních možností poskytnout potřebným pomocnou ruku.

Statement by Palacký University Rector Martin Procházka on the situation in Ukraine

Saturday 26 February 2022

The war in Ukraine is not just the fight of the inhabitants of this sovereign state gratuitously attacked by the Russian aggressor – it is also our fight and our war. In my position as Rector of Palacký University Olomouc, I categorically condemn the Russian attack on Ukraine. This is a wanton advance by Russia, with the forced occupation of a foreign country as its aim. The political agenda of President Putin disqualifies the Russian Federation in the eyes of the whole civilised world and defines him as a war criminal.

I have given my voice in agreement with the statement of the Czech Rectors’ Conference, and I am observing with deep disappointment and concern how the Russian Federation is trampling international law. I have great fears – not only for the citizens of Ukraine – but also for the values upon which contemporary democratic governments in the countries of the European Union and the entire world are founded. I fear that not only the people of Ukraine but also all democratic states are now facing a very difficult trial.

Palacký University joins in expressing solidarity with the people of Ukraine, with Ukrainian universities, and their students and employees. Our thoughts are with our Ukrainian students currently studying in Olomouc – and with their families. Palacký University is ready to provide immediate help and to use all the means at its command. We are taking steps to ease the difficult existential situations of Ukrainian citizens, especially our students and employees – but also students, colleagues, and friends from partner universities in Ukraine.

I’m convinced that Russia’s decision has severely eroded Czech-Russian academic alliances. This act of Russian aggression has irrevocably made inroads into the relationships between our two countries, not only regarding cooperation in university education and science. We are an internationally-oriented university – and the current situation is one which is unacceptable to us. Our own history and experience allow us to understand, better than anyone else, the desperate situation Ukraine and its people now find themselves in. Thus our NO! to the attempted usurpation by Russia should resound all the more strongly. We stand together with Ukraine; we stand together with our fellow European citizens.

Martin Procházka

Rector, Palacký University Olomouc

Prohlášení rektora Univerzity Palackého Martina Procházky k situaci na Ukrajině
Sobota 26.

Naše vlastní historie a zkušenosti nám lépe než komukoliv jinému umožňují chápat zoufalou situaci, v níž se Ukrajina a její lidé nacházejí. O to silněji by mělo být slyšet naše „NE“ uchvatitelským snahám Ruska.

After attack on Ukraine
DAAD restricts academic exchange with Russia

Press release from 25-02-2022

Following the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is restricting its exchange with the Russian Federation. At the same time, the exchange organisation is sticking to its long-standing partner institutions in Russia.

“Russia’s attack on Ukraine was and is a massive violation of international law. There can be no normal relations with a state that is waging a war of aggression against its neighbouring country in the middle of Europe, not even in foreign science policy. That is why we are currently restricting the German-Russian exchange relations funded by the DAAD,” said DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee.

The DAAD is stopping applications for Russia scholarships and cancelling the selection for DAAD scholarships to Russia. Even German scholarship holders who have already been selected cannot currently receive financial support for a planned stay in Russia. The DAAD expects German universities to suspend all DAAD-funded project activities with partner institutions in Russia and Belarus.

“We know that this step also creates injustice and affects numerous academics and students who are committed to peaceful and constitutional conditions as well as good neighbourly relations. We are aware that many of our Russian friends and our Russian partner institutions reject the campaign against Ukraine from the bottom of their hearts. At the same time, in view of the war, we believe it is imperative to critically review the promotion of exchange relations with Russia,” Joybrato Mukherjee continued.

The measures taken now – in consultation with the German government and after discussion with the German Rectors’ Conference and the German universities – could be further adjusted in the coming days and weeks. “We must recognise that we are facing a major foreign, defence and security policy challenge. A challenge that has not been seen in this form in Europe since the Second World War and which is shaking the European foundation of values. Foreign science policy must also ask itself what contribution it can make to the overall strategy of the German government and the European Union to isolate Russia,” says the DAAD President.

Standing by Ukraine
Comenius University Bratislava expresses its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and solidarity with its people.

We reject the aggression that threatens the freedom and lives of the people of Ukraine and is trying to destabilize peace in Europe. As an institution professing freedom, democracy and humanism, we consider it our duty to stand clearly by the side of our neighbour in these difficult times for Ukraine. At the same time, we assure our Ukrainian students, as well as our employees, of our solidarity with their difficult existential position. Like in the case of the Belarus crisis, we are now ready to help students and researchers who will be forced to leave their homeland so that they can continue their study and work at our university.

We call on universities, as beacons of critical thinking, to put their weight behind the fight against political propaganda which leads to military conflicts and to put all of their intellectual potential at the service of finding peaceful solutions to domestic and international conflicts.

Statement of the Rector

Comenius University firmly stands behind its faculty and students from Ukraine. This is how we want to help.

Today at 2 pm, the Rector of Comenius University, Marek Števček, summoned an extraordinary crisis meeting, which was also attended by the representatives of lecturers and students from Ukraine. Our university hosts 454 students and 11 members of staff from Ukraine. After considering the current events, Comenius University has decided to take the following steps to help our students and staff manage the consequences of the current situation:

  • Extraordinary scholarships. Because the war has completely cut some people off from their financial sources, we will soon being contacting all our Ukrainian students, offering them an opportunity to apply for an extraordinary scholarship.
  • Accommodation fee waiver Comenius University will waive all accommodation fees for its Ukrainian students in the University’s dormitories from now on until the end of the summer semester.
  • Temporary accommodation for family members. We will reserve accommodation capacity in our facilities for those students and staff who may need to accommodate their closest family relatives.
  • Psychological counseling. Students and staff are free to use the Comenius University Psychological Counseling Service. In case of need we are prepared to boost its capacity to handle any traumatizing experiences or anxiety caused by the current situation.
  • Accommodating the students’ reduced ability to participate in studies. We ask the lecturers to assist the students from Ukraine and enable them to continue their study even if they are unable to participate in person or online. We ask them to accommodate the students in their study as far as possible, given the circumstances.

At the same time, we have created a single contact point for Ukrainian students and staff who need support – but also for those who would like to offer assistance, such as accommodation or other forms of help. The e-mail address of the contact point is ukrajina@uniba.sk.

The rector of Comenius University and the university management sympathize with everyone whose life was affected by this situation. The offer applies to any students and faculty who were affected by the war, regardless of their nationality. We will do everything we can to help you minimize the consequences. If this conflict has made life difficult for you in other ways, do not hesitate to contact us.

Jagiellonian University Rector’s letter to the academic community

It is with great sadness and indignation that I have received the tragic information about Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine, an unprecedented breach of international agreements and cooperation standards.

On behalf of myself and the Jagiellonian University academic community that I represent, I wish to express my solidarity with the entire Ukrainian nation and support for Ukraine in these difficult times. I sincerely hope that we will be able to further strengthen and develop all forms of cooperation with our Ukrainian academic partners, as well as enable them to continue teaching and research process.

At this special moment, I would like to address the large group of Ukrainian students, doctoral students and employees of the Jagiellonian University with words of support. You are not alone and you can count on our assistance for you, your families and friends in these difficult circumstances.

Fully aware of the need to uphold the most important values, universal and essential to all people, I express my firm opposition to actions that should not take place in the modern world, while strongly identifying myself with the motto of the Jagiellonian University Plus Ratio Quam Vis.

Plus Ratio Quam Vis.

Rektor UJ: Pragnę wyrazić solidarność z całym narodem ukraińskim

Z wielkim smutkiem i oburzeniem przyjąłem tragiczną informację o agresji zbrojnej Rosji na Ukrainę, stanowiącej bezprecedensowe złamanie umów międzynarodowych i standardów współpracy – napisał prof. Jacek Popiel, rektor Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, w liście do społeczności akademickiej najstarszej polskiej uczelni, którego treść publikujemy w dalszej części.

W imieniu własnym i reprezentowanej przeze mnie wspólnoty akademickiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego pragnę wyrazić solidarność z całym narodem ukraińskim i poparcie dla Ukrainy w tych ciężkich chwilach.
